Vietnam and Cambodia
Moc Bai border crossing
Moc Bai is the Vietnamese checkpoint in Tay Ninh province. Bavet is the Cambodian town on the other side. A return trip involves entry and exit checks in both countries, so have your documents ready for each side before you travel.
Where it is and when to arrive
From central Ho Chi Minh City, Moc Bai is roughly 70 to 80 km along QL22, about two hours by car each way. On arrival you first reach Vietnamese immigration. After leaving Vietnam, continue to Cambodian immigration at Bavet.
The Moc Bai checkpoint operates from 06:00 to 22:00 daily, with no midday closure. These are checkpoint hours, not bus departure times or a promise that every visa service runs until closing. Confirm arrangements on both sides before departure and leave time to finish the return crossing.
A morning arrival leaves more room for queues or a document query. Do not plan to begin the crossing just before 22:00.
Check how you will enter both countries
Confirm that your passport qualifies for Cambodian entry and that you have a valid basis to return to Vietnam on your travel date. If you will use a Vietnam e-visa, check its approval, passport details, validity dates and permitted number of entries. Moc Bai is on the Vietnam Immigration Department's list of e-visa border gates.
A pending application does not give you permission to return. The official portal describes personal e-visa applications as being for foreigners outside Vietnam. If you still need a new visa, establish the correct application arrangements and allow for time outside Vietnam before planning a same-day trip.
Carry your original passport, printed entry documents, copies saved on your phone, recent passport photos and cash. Check passport validity and photo requirements for your nationality with the Cambodian authorities before you travel.
What happens at each counter
- Vietnam departure, Moc Bai. Present your passport and current Vietnamese stay documents to the departure officer. Wait for the exit check to be completed and collect your passport before continuing.
- Cambodian visa counter, Bavet, if needed. If eligible for a visa on arrival, complete the requested application and present your passport, supporting documents and cash fee. If you already hold an accepted visa or qualify for exemption, ask the officer which queue to use.
- Cambodian arrival. Present your passport and visa or exemption documents for the entry check. A visa application and admission into Cambodia are separate steps. Check that your entry has been recorded before leaving the counter.
- Cambodian departure. For the return journey, go through Cambodian exit control and collect your passport after the exit check. Confirm any same-day turnaround conditions with Cambodian immigration before making the trip.
- Vietnam arrival, Moc Bai. Present your passport and the documents that allow this entry to Vietnam. Check the admitted-until date before leaving immigration, then return to your agreed pickup point.
Follow the signs and the officers' directions if queues or counter locations change. Keep your passport with you between checks. A driver or helper can explain the route through the buildings, but immigration officers decide admission.
The Vietnamese side, step by step
Enter the departure hall and join the exit queue indicated by staff. Have your passport open at the identification page, with your current visa or other stay documents ready. The officer checks your identity, passport, latest entry record and whether your authorised stay covers the departure date. Answer any questions about your stay directly; keep supporting documents accessible.
After processing, collect your passport and check the exit stamp before walking away. Make sure it records departure from Vietnam with the correct date. If it is missing, unclear or appears wrong, ask the same officer to check it immediately. Resolving a recording error at that counter is simpler than discovering it during Cambodian entry or your return to Vietnam. An exit stamp does not grant permission to enter the next country.
The Cambodian side at Bavet
If you need a visa on arrival, go to the visa application desk before the arrival counter. Complete the form using your passport details, provide a recent passport-size photograph and pay the applicable fee in US dollar cash. Bring printed photos rather than relying on a phone image or a photo service being available. Confirm the current format and number required before departure.
Ordinary passport holders from countries such as the United States, United Kingdom and Australia typically need a visa. Cambodia lists visa exemptions for citizens of Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Brunei and Myanmar on its official visa information page. This is not an exhaustive account of special arrangements. Fees, eligibility and permitted stays vary by nationality and passport type; confirm your own case with Cambodian authorities.
Once your visa is issued, complete the separate arrival check. Check the entry stamp and permitted stay, even if you intend to leave again that day.
The walk between the gates
Expect to get out for immigration checks and walk between buildings. Allow for a few hundred metres between the checkpoint areas, plus the approach from your drop-off point; the total depends on parking and the pedestrian route in use. There can be exposed stretches in heat or rain. Wear comfortable shoes and keep water and documents in a small bag.
A normal return car booking leaves the driver waiting in Vietnam. You cannot assume you can stay in the vehicle through passport control. With a cross-border coach, ask staff whether all luggage must come off for inspection and where you reboard. Keep valuables with you. If leaving a larger bag in a waiting car, agree secure storage with the driver first. Arrange mobility assistance in advance if walking is difficult.
When the crossing is busy
Morning coach arrivals can put a large group into a queue at once. Weekends and public holidays in either country can add traffic, particularly around Tet and Khmer New Year. A quiet Vietnamese exit hall does not tell you how long the Cambodian visa queue will take.
Each queue adds to the day: visa issuance, entry and departure can have different waits. An early start provides a buffer but cannot guarantee quick processing. Ask about holiday arrangements before travelling, keep the driver informed and avoid booking a fixed afternoon commitment. What causes delays or refusals?
- Wrong visa entry date: an approved visa may not yet be valid on your return date. Reschedule within its validity or obtain corrected permission before leaving. Do not expect an officer to bring its start date forward.
- Name or passport-number mismatch: compare the approval with the passport character by character. Contact the issuing authority through its official correction or application process; do not edit the approval PDF yourself.
- Expired passport: postpone travel and contact your embassy about renewal. A passport that has not expired may still fail the remaining-validity requirement. Check both countries' rules and whether a replacement passport requires new visa documents.
- Missing cash: obtain the required currency before Vietnamese exit. If already at a counter, ask staff about legitimate payment options. Do not assume you can reach an ATM beyond Cambodian immigration before being admitted.
- Overstay on the Vietnamese record: contact Vietnamese immigration before the trip to establish the required resolution. Bring your entry and stay records if you believe the record is wrong. Do not budget a guessed daily fine or assume payment guarantees immediate departure and re-entry.
If refused, ask which document or condition is missing and what official next step applies. Contact the relevant immigration authority and your embassy if needed.
Keep visa fees and transport separate
Cambodian entry
A Cambodian tourist visa on arrival is commonly around USD 30 in cash for most nationalities. Confirm eligibility and the applicable fee before departure. Bring usable US dollar notes and ask what any additional payment covers; a helper's charge is separate from a government visa fee.
Vietnam entry documents
If you need a Vietnam e-visa, the official application fees are USD 25 for single entry or USD 50 for multiple entries. These are application fees, separate from transport or an agent's service charge. Your existing valid entry permission may mean you do not need a new application.
The journey and any assistance
Ask for a return transport quote from your departure city. Confirm whether it includes driver waiting time, parking, pickup, and border assistance. Public bus tickets, private car hire and a service package cover different things, so compare the total for your party. Carry Vietnamese dong for the journey and a reserve for delays.
Money at the border
Bring Vietnamese dong for spending in Vietnam and clean US dollar notes for the Cambodian visa desk. In Cambodia, riel and US dollars are used for everyday payments, but confirm the currency and change before buying. Avoid torn, marked or badly worn dollar notes, which may be rejected, and carry smaller denominations.
Arrange exchange at an authorised bank or exchange counter in the city before departure. If using a border exchange service, confirm the rate, commission and final amount before handing over money. ATMs are reported around Moc Bai and are available in Bavet, but do not rely on a working machine within either immigration area. Check a bank locator for current locations and access. A Vietnamese ATM normally supplies dong, not the dollar cash needed for a Cambodian visa.
Moc Bai, Ha Tien or Tinh Bien?
- Moc Bai and Bavet: the closest of these three crossings to Ho Chi Minh City, on the main road towards Phnom Penh.
- Ha Tien and Prek Chak: suits the southwestern Mekong Delta, a journey via Ha Tien from Phu Quoc, or onward travel towards Kampot.
- Tinh Bien and Phnom Den: suits Chau Doc and An Giang in the Mekong Delta. It is generally the quieter choice for tourist traffic, though a smaller queue does not guarantee faster processing.
Choose by your starting point and onward route. Check each gate's hours and accepted visas independently, especially Cambodian e-visa acceptance, before changing crossings. If you plan to go further than the border itself, the Moc Bai to Phnom Penh day trip covers the road, the bus and van options, and whether a day in Cambodia is worth adding to the run.
Which southern cities use Moc Bai?
Ho Chi Minh City is the shortest drive of these four departure points. Mui Ne, Da Lat and Nha Trang require longer journeys; confirm whether your trip is direct or connects through Ho Chi Minh City, and whether it starts the night before.
- Ho Chi Minh City departures: arrange pickup in the city and a return vehicle.
- Mui Ne departures: check pickup location and the full return schedule.
- Da Lat departures: allow for the journey down from the highlands and any connection.
- Nha Trang departures: ask about overnight travel and the expected return date.
