The drive to Moc Bai is roughly 70 to 80 km on QL22, about two hours each way from the centre of Ho Chi Minh City. Allow a full day for the journey and border checks, even if you hope to return in the afternoon.
You need permission to enter Cambodia and to re-enter Vietnam on the day you travel. Check your passport details, entry-document validity and remaining permitted entries. If you are relying on a visa exemption, confirm that it applies to your passport and this trip.
If you still need a Vietnam e-visa, check the official application conditions, including the requirement that personal applicants be outside Vietnam. Do not build a same-day plan around an unapproved application. Arrange enough time outside Vietnam if approval is still needed.
The Moc Bai crossing page explains the Vietnamese and Cambodian counters, the usual fees and the order of checks. Confirm same-day turnaround arrangements for your nationality before travelling.
The drive
From your pickup point to QL22
From central Ho Chi Minh City, the route heads towards Tay Ninh on QL22 and ends at the Moc Bai checkpoint. Bavet is on the Cambodian side. The two-hour drive is an estimate for a car, not a guaranteed journey time for every neighbourhood or a public bus service.
Give your driver the full pickup address. A pickup outside the centre, traffic, stops and queues can lengthen the day. Agree where the driver will wait on the Vietnamese side, how to contact them after immigration, and what happens if you return later than planned.
Moc Bai operates from 06:00 to 22:00 daily without a midday closure. Travel early enough to finish both countries' checks and the return crossing with time to spare. Confirm any service changes before departure.
Pickup areas
Pickup by district
Use the familiar district names below to describe your area, then send the exact address and a map pin. These are cautious planning allowances above the roughly two-hour central-city drive, not measured journey times or promised pickup windows. Ask the driver to confirm them for your address and departure hour.
Central districts: District 1 and District 3 are the baseline. Allow another 15 to 30 minutes if the vehicle collects other passengers or your street is difficult to access.
District 2, including Thao Dien: budget an extra 20 to 40 minutes for getting across the city towards the northwest route.
District 7, including Phu My Hung: budget an extra 30 to 60 minutes for the approach from the south.
Thu Duc farther northeast: budget an extra 30 to 60 minutes, potentially more from an outlying address. Clarify whether the pickup is in Thao Dien or farther away.
These allowances overlap; do not add District 2 and Thu Duc together. Congestion, rain and multiple pickups can exceed them. Confirm whether pickup is at your door or an agreed meeting point, and ask about any additional charge before booking.
An example day
A same-day timetable by private car
This is a planning example for someone whose entry documents are ready. It is not a published departure schedule or a guaranteed return time. All times are local.
06:00 to 06:30: leave your agreed pickup point in central Ho Chi Minh City.
08:00 to 08:30: aim to reach Moc Bai after roughly two hours on the road.
08:30 to 11:30: reserve this part of the morning for Vietnamese exit, Cambodian entry and exit, and Vietnamese re-entry. This three-hour allowance is a planning buffer; queues and document checks can take longer.
11:30 to 12:30: after all checks are complete, meet the driver and allow time for a break.
13:30 to 14:30: an illustrative return window after another roughly two-hour drive. Keep the afternoon free in case the morning runs late.
If you use public buses, build your day around the actual outbound and last return departures. The car timetable above does not include bus waits or connections. Avoid a tight onward flight or another appointment that depends on a fixed return hour.
Transport
Private car or public bus?
Private car
Choose a car if you need pickup at your address, want to share the vehicle with friends, or need a driver who waits while you cross.
Agree the pickup and return location before paying.
Ask for the total return price per vehicle and the passenger limit.
Check waiting-time limits, parking, tolls and late-return charges.
Confirm whether border assistance is included or costs extra.
Public bus
Consider the bus if keeping transport spending down matters most and you can manage the route and border formalities yourself.
Confirm the current boarding point, route, fare and any transfer.
Check how far the final stop is from immigration.
Find out the last return departure before you leave the city.
Allow for waiting between services and keep money for a backup ride.
The public bus is generally cheaper and slower. You pay per passenger, usually for each leg, and spend extra time reaching the stop, waiting and making connections. It works poorly when you have heavy bags, limited mobility or a return that finishes after the last service. A private car costs more overall but charges per vehicle, so sharing spreads that cost. It provides flexible pickup and fewer transport waits, but cannot shorten immigration queues or guarantee admission. A delayed crossing can also exceed the car's included waiting time.
Ask the bus operator for current service details rather than relying on an old route number or timetable. A public bus ticket covers transport; it does not arrange immigration checks. Compare the full return cost, including travel to the bus stop and any final connection, with the car quote divided among your group.
Check the items that could stop your return before packing conveniences. This order prioritises consequences and avoidable mistakes; it is not a statistical ranking of refusals.
Approved permission for the return: open the actual Vietnam approval, not the payment receipt or application confirmation. Check its first and last valid dates, passport number, name and remaining entries. A previously used single-entry visa does not provide another entry.
The original passport: check expiry, remaining validity, condition and blank pages for both countries. If renewed since applying, establish whether the approval is valid with the new passport before travelling.
Your current Vietnamese stay: check the admitted-until date and any extension or residence documents. Resolve an apparent overstay or record error with immigration before departure.
Cambodian admission: confirm visa exemption or visa eligibility for your nationality, the documents required at Bavet, and any same-day return conditions.
Usable copies and payment: print approvals, save them offline, and bring the required photos and cash. A dead phone or unusable dollar note can delay otherwise correct paperwork.
Pending approval
If the e-visa has not been approved
Do not cross out of Vietnam for a same-day run if your return depends on an unapproved e-visa. Submission, payment and an agent's estimated completion time are not permission to enter. A driver cannot obtain admission by showing that an application is pending.
Check the application through the official Vietnam e-visa portal, respond to any correction request and rearrange transport. Follow its application conditions, including the requirement for personal applicants to be outside Vietnam. If you need to leave to apply, plan a stay abroad with accommodation and flexible return travel instead of a same-day turnaround.
Waiting for approval does not extend your current Vietnamese stay. If that stay is about to expire, contact immigration promptly about lawful departure or other available arrangements. If already in Cambodia, remain within your permitted Cambodian stay while resolving the application; return only once you have valid entry permission.
Contingency planning
If you return later than planned
Tell the driver as soon as a queue or document query threatens the agreed collection time. Confirm further waiting charges or replacement transport. Bus passengers should check the last departure while there is still time to choose another ride; the bus service may end well before immigration closes.
Plan around Moc Bai's 22:00 closing time, with a substantial margin to complete both countries' checks. Arriving at the gate at 21:59 is not a workable plan. Ask officers about the remaining processing window if you are running late; do not assume the Cambodian visa desk follows the same hours.
If you must stay in Cambodia overnight, arrange accommodation in Bavet and tell your driver and hotel in Vietnam. Keep cash for lodging, food and new transport. Make sure your Cambodian admission remains valid and your Vietnam permission covers the next day's entry. Before completing Cambodian exit, explain the delay to immigration. If already processed out, ask officers how to regularise your position before leaving the controlled area.
Budget
What the day costs, itemised
Transport, per car: obtain a total return quote for your pickup address and group size. Confirm fuel, tolls, parking and the included waiting period. Divide that total by the passengers sharing it; government visa fees remain individual costs.
Cambodia visa, per person: budget around USD 30 cash for a tourist visa on arrival if required and eligible. Confirm the fee and nationality conditions. An exemption or an already-paid valid visa changes this item; assistance is a separate charge.
Vietnam e-visa, per applicant: the official fees are USD 25 for single entry and USD 50 for multiple entries. Include this only if you need a new application, and separate any agent's fee.
Food and drinks, per person: set aside spending money for meals, water and snacks. Ask whether a package includes lunch; no standard meal price applies across stops.
Keep a separate reserve for an extra night, longer driver waiting or a replacement ride. Ask which payments are due in advance and which are cash on the day, so you do not count prepaid fees twice.
What to bring
Pack before the morning pickup
Original passport: check its condition, remaining validity and blank pages against both countries' requirements.
Entry and stay documents: your current Vietnam documents, approved documents for the return entry, and Cambodian entry documents if arranged in advance. Bring printed copies and save copies offline.
Recent passport photos and a pen: confirm the current photo requirements if applying for a Cambodian visa on arrival.
US dollar cash: Cambodia visa on arrival is commonly around USD 30 for most nationalities. Confirm your eligibility and fee before setting off.
Vietnamese dong and a reserve: for transport, food, water and unexpected waiting or a replacement ride.
A charged phone: save the driver's number, meeting point and return bus details. A power bank is useful during waits.
Water, a snack and weather protection: bring what you need while moving between the immigration buildings.
Get a breakdown of government visa fees, transport and any assistance before paying for a package. The border cost breakdown explains which payments are separate.
