This trip takes you from Da Nang to the Lao Bao checkpoint, into Laos at Dansavan, and back into Vietnam on a new approved e-visa. Allow a full day for the drive and both countries' immigration checks. A same-day return depends on having valid documents before you leave.
The order is Vietnam exit, Laos entry, Laos exit, then Vietnam re-entry. Visiting the space between the gates does not complete the trip. You must be admitted into Laos and formally depart before returning through Vietnamese immigration.
Your new Vietnam e-visa must be approved before crossing out for this same-day plan. An application receipt, payment confirmation or promised processing time is not entry permission. Check the approval against your passport, the first and last valid dates, and the permitted entries. A used single-entry visa cannot be used again.
The official Vietnam e-visa portal lists Lao Bao among accepted land gates and states that personal applicants must be outside Vietnam. If you still need to apply, establish the correct arrangements and plan enough time abroad for approval. Do not assume a new application can be approved during your border stop.
Confirm Laos entry eligibility and same-day turnaround arrangements for your passport before booking. Keep your current Vietnamese stay valid until departure; waiting for another visa does not extend it.
The route
Where Lao Bao and Dansavan are
Lao Bao is in Quang Tri province, on Route 9, also called QL9. From Da Nang, the approach runs north towards Hue and the Dong Ha area, then west through Cam Lo and Khe Sanh towards the border. QL9 is the western part of the journey, not the entire road from Da Nang.
The checkpoint across the border is Dansavan, also written Dansavanh, in Savannakhet province, Laos. Savannakhet province is not the same as Savannakhet city: the return run uses the border checkpoint, without a journey to the provincial capital.
The drive
Allow a full day for the road journey
Plan for roughly 250 to 290 km depending on your starting point and route, typically about four to five and a half hours each way by car. The operator's current route estimate is about 290 km, including the northern approach and QL9. Confirm the distance and timing for your exact pickup address.
Hoi An adds time because it lies south of Da Nang. Road conditions and stops vary: traffic, rain, mountain-road visibility and comfort breaks can extend either leg. Agree the route, pickup time and waiting arrangements with the driver. Keep the evening free rather than relying on a fixed return hour.
Opening hours
Plan around the passenger-processing window
The usual passenger window is commonly reported as 07:00 to 19:00 daily. The operator distinguishes that window from longer posted gate hours, while Lao immigration lists Dansavan as operating from 07:00 to 22:00. Do not assume that a later gate closing means every visa desk will still process your return.
Confirm hours on both sides before travelling, including visa issuance and the last passenger checks. This is not a 24-hour gate. Arriving late can strand you overnight. Aim to finish well before 19:00, with time for queues, document questions and the walk between checkpoints.
At the border
The crossing, step by step
Vietnam exit at Lao Bao: present your original passport and current stay documents at departure control. The officer checks your entry record and authorised stay. Collect your passport and check the exit stamp and date before leaving the counter.
Between the gates: follow the designated route and officers' directions to Dansavan. Expect to leave the vehicle and walk between immigration areas. Keep your passport, cash and approval copies with you. Agree the driver's waiting point on the Vietnamese side before separating.
Laos visa on arrival: if required and eligible, go to the Dansavan visa desk. Complete the requested form, provide your passport and photos, and pay the applicable cash fee. If you have another accepted entry document or an exemption, ask which counter to use.
Laos entry: complete the arrival check after visa issuance. Check that immigration has recorded your entry and permitted stay. Getting a visa and being admitted into the country are separate steps.
Laos exit: follow the departure procedure for the return journey. Collect your passport after exit control and check the record. Do not walk back towards Vietnam without completing this step.
Vietnam re-entry: return to the Lao Bao arrival counter with your passport and approved new e-visa. Check the new entry stamp and admitted-until date before meeting your driver. Ask the officer immediately if anything appears incorrect.
Queue locations and pedestrian arrangements can change. Follow the current instructions at each gate; a driver or helper can assist with directions, but immigration officers decide admission.
Laos entry
Visa on arrival and cash at Dansavan
Most nationalities can obtain a Laos visa on arrival at Dansavan, but eligibility and fees vary by nationality and passport type. The Lao immigration checkpoint listing confirms the visa-on-arrival facility. Confirm that you personally qualify before leaving Vietnam.
Fees are commonly quoted between USD 30 and USD 45, payable in cash. Treat that range as a planning allowance, not a guaranteed tariff. Confirm the exact fee for your nationality, photo requirements and any required arrival forms before travel.
Bring clean US dollar notes and a reserve. Torn, marked or badly worn notes may cause payment problems. Ask what any separate charge covers: visa fees, transport and optional assistance are different costs. Do not depend on card payment or finding a working ATM before admission.
An example day
A same-day timetable by private car
This is a planning example for a traveller whose entry documents are approved and valid. It is not a published schedule or a guaranteed return time. All times are local.
04:30: depart from your agreed pickup point in Da Nang after checking that you have your passport, approvals and cash.
09:00 to 10:00: reach Lao Bao after the outward drive. Longer stops or poor road conditions can move this window later.
09:00 to 13:00: use the late morning and early afternoon for Vietnam exit, Laos entry and exit, and Vietnam re-entry. This overlapping window allows roughly three hours after arrival; it is a planning buffer, not a processing-time promise.
13:00 to 14:00: meet your driver once all checks are complete and allow for a meal or rest stop before the return drive.
17:30 to 19:30: an illustrative return window in Da Nang after another long drive. Border or road delays can push arrival later.
Do not apply this car example to public buses. Verify actual connections and last departures separately, and avoid a same-evening flight that depends on everything running to plan.
Transport
Private car or public bus?
Private car
A direct car with an early pickup is what makes a same-day plan practical. It removes connection waits and lets you agree a return collection point.
Request a total return quote per vehicle.
Confirm pickup, passenger capacity, tolls and parking.
Check included waiting time and late-return charges.
Ask whether border assistance is included.
Public bus
Buses from Da Nang towards Dong Ha and Lao Bao are generally cheaper and much slower. Stops, transfers and the final connection to immigration add time.
Confirm current boarding and drop-off points.
Check whether a transfer is required.
Verify the last return departure before setting out.
Keep money for alternative transport or an overnight stay.
For this route, contact Da Nang Visa Run, the route operator, with your pickup address, nationality and proposed date. Ask for an itemised quote. A private car improves control over transport, but it cannot shorten immigration queues or guarantee re-entry.
What to bring
Pack in Da Nang before departure
Original passport: check expiry, remaining validity, condition and blank pages against both countries' entry requirements.
Approved Vietnam e-visa: bring a printed copy and save the PDF offline. Keep current Vietnamese stay documents accessible too.
Clean US dollar notes: bring the confirmed Laos visa fee and spare cash. Carry Vietnamese dong separately for the drive, meals and other spending.
Recent passport photos: confirm the required format and number before travel. Do not rely on finding a photographer at the counter.
Water and snacks: the crossing is in a mountainous area with limited services. Prepare for waits without convenient shops.
A charged phone and pen: save the driver's number, meeting point and booking details offline. A power bank and rain protection are useful.
Keep documents and valuables in a small bag that stays with you through both checkpoints. Arrange help in advance if walking between the gates is difficult.
Contingency planning
What can go wrong
Late arrival: a 19:00 passenger-processing cutoff leaves no room for an evening start at the border. Finish both countries' checks well beforehand. If delayed, contact the driver and ask officers about the remaining processing window.
Unapproved e-visa: postpone the same-day run if return approval is missing. If already in Laos, arrange a lawful stay and accommodation while resolving the application. Return only with valid entry permission.
Expired passport: contact your embassy about renewal before travelling. Even an unexpired passport can fail remaining-validity requirements. Check whether a replacement passport also requires replacement visa documents.
Insufficient cash: obtain the right currency before Vietnamese exit. At the counter, ask staff about legitimate payment options rather than assuming a cash machine is accessible beyond immigration.
Vietnamese overstay on record: contact Vietnamese immigration before departure to establish the required resolution. Bring your stay records if you believe there is an error. Do not assume paying a fine guarantees immediate exit and re-entry.
If you miss the return window, you can be stranded on the Laos side overnight. Tell the driver, arrange accommodation consistent with your immigration status and check that your Vietnam approval covers the later entry date. If already processed out of Laos, ask officers how to regularise your position before leaving the controlled area.
Other crossings
Routes from central Vietnam
Lao Bao is the standard Laos crossing for Da Nang, Hue and Hoi An. Travellers starting elsewhere can check Hoi An departures or Hue departures for pickup arrangements and journey estimates.
Cha Lo is an alternative for some routes. Check its hours and Laos entry-document requirements separately; do not assume Dansavan's visa-on-arrival arrangements apply there. For comparison, Moc Bai serves the Cambodia route from southern Vietnam. Choose the crossing around your starting point and valid entry documents.
