Hue uses the Lao Bao crossing into Laos, where the opposite checkpoint is Dansavanh. At roughly 150 to 170 km each way, Hue has the shortest drive of the Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An group. Ask for the distance from your specific pickup address. A return within one day is a practical plan when your documents are ready, although immigration queues and the road west still need room in the itinerary.
A northern start gives Hue its advantage
The usual approach leaves Hue to the north, follows QL1A towards Dong Ha and then takes QL9 west to Lao Bao. Starting on the north side of the city puts you closer to the outbound road. Someone staying south of the Perfume River still needs time to cross the city first. Share your hotel location so the pickup estimate includes that urban section, rather than assuming every Hue address has the same start.
Hue avoids the longer coastal approach needed from Da Nang and Hoi An, but the remaining QL9 section is still a substantial part of the trip. It runs inland towards Khe Sanh and the border, where bends, slower vehicles and wet weather can affect progress. Use the shorter distance as breathing room for the crossing, not as a reason to choose the latest possible departure.
Keep pickups outside Hue separate when discussing your plan. A stay near Phu Bai or farther south at Lang Co adds an approach before the car can head north; it should not be treated as a central Hue collection. For the return, agree whether you will finish at your hotel or another address. Avoid booking an onward departure from Phu Bai against the earliest estimated time back in town.
Bring what the Lao Bao day requires
- Passport and return evidence: Have your original passport, existing Vietnam stay papers and the documents you will use to enter Vietnam again after the Laos visit.
- The Dansavanh document set: Check the Laos entry requirements for your own passport and prepare any requested approvals, forms and photographs before the Hue pickup.
- Rain protection and drinking water: Carry a light waterproof layer and water for the inland road and any outdoor waiting at the checkpoints.
- Confirmed payment funds and contact details: Ask which currencies are needed, keep a reserve for delays, and save the driver's number and your Hue drop-off address.
