Hoi An to Lao Bao
Visa runs from Hoi An to Lao Bao
From Hoi An, the central border route heads to Lao Bao in Vietnam and Dansavanh in Laos. The road journey is approximately 300 to 350 km each way; confirm the actual distance for your pickup address and chosen route. A same-day return can be arranged when entry documents and border timings allow, but reserve the whole day. Hoi An's position south of Da Nang adds travel before the approach to QL9.
Your first leg is getting north of Da Nang
A departure from Hoi An starts earlier in the corridor than one from Da Nang. You first need to travel north towards Da Nang, then continue towards Hue and the Quang Tri approach before turning west onto QL9 for Lao Bao. Comparing only the final road to the border misses the extra distance from your Hoi An accommodation. Ask for a Hoi An pickup estimate rather than using a Da Nang departure time.
The meeting point also deserves attention. If you are staying in an Ancient Town lane, check where the vehicle can actually stop and whether you need to walk out with your bag. An Bang and countryside accommodation have different approaches. Send a map pin as well as the hotel name, and establish whether other passengers will be collected in Da Nang before the northbound journey continues.
On the way home, reaching Da Nang still leaves the final transfer to Hoi An. Check that the return ends at your agreed accommodation or meeting point, especially if the trip uses a shared vehicle. Keep dinner reservations and evening activities flexible. Rain or slow traffic on the western QL9 section can affect the whole return, even when the coastal stretch near Hoi An looks clear.
Prepare for Laos and a long central drive
- Original passport and Vietnam documents: Take your current stay paperwork and the approval or other documents supporting your planned return through Lao Bao.
- Laos entry paperwork: Confirm what your passport requires at Dansavanh, including any advance approval, photos or forms, before leaving Hoi An.
- A compact bag and rain cover: Choose something easy to carry from an Ancient Town meeting point and between the border buildings.
- Water, payment cash and a charged phone: Check payment arrangements in advance and save the Hoi An pickup pin, return meeting point and driver's contact offline.
